Kolyada (“caroling” in Ukrainian) is a Slavic tradition meant to welcome the gradual return of the sun following the long dark days of winter. It is celebrated by neighbors who visit each other, singing and sharing treats.

This traditional Slavic winter song “banishes the winter cold” with its simple melody and charming accompaniment. The first two unison verses outline the tonic, making them easy to learn by singers of all ages. A contrasting B section slows down and changes to the parallel minor key and is sung in two parts. The A section returns with a charming three-part round, great for choirs ready to take on the next level of part singing!
